New software version

I actually think the PiD logic is working just fine, really well in fact. I’ve never had an issue with flame out or not able to reach temps since the May update, unless I just had badly forgone cleaning the firepot too long. Actually seems even better recently.

I think there are issues, maybe me, Ahoneyman, whoareya, and Riddle are a representative small sample, with the connect controller itself. Maybe new or now easier to identify common threads that have been there with the new software update. Time will tell and it will be interesting what Weber has to say. I do like that their response this time was to not just ship another part, I mean for me at least everything is new except the cook box itself 🤣
I agree, have yet to have a functional issue with my EX4. And after following numerous other sites, many of the issues seem to operator error types.

However, I have noted on many of those sites that more EX6 owners are saying the experience flameouts and slower response to set-point, and wonder if that is related to the increased size and whether or not a “1 size fits all” PID logic might contribute to some of the operator issues and complaints. The good news is that those issues seem to be diminishing with each firmware update.

Had my first major issue with the new software or firmware.

Ever since the 1.4.2350 update I’ve had had my temp setpoint go to dashes and if try to update in the app it gives error and says please ignite your SmokeFire by setting target on grill. This happens over and over but at least the grill has stayed at temp. That was until today, I have a 8lb pork shoulder going and it has done that 3 times where I’ve had to go out to the grill and set it back. That was until jus now when I checked it instead of dashes it showed blank and the grill temp was also blank. I went out to the grill and it was not running and fire had gone out. I got no alerts, no temp drop warning nothing. Checked pellets and all good there. I tried to set temp and it would do nothing, so I turned off and back on, then set temp and it got back up in 15 minutes or so. This new software or firmware seems to have some major bugs for me at least. I’d had no issues with the previous version, seemed like the SmokeFire was finally ready for prime time but now not so sure. I’ve submitted ticket to Weber.

abmet, if you have not seen it, look at entry number 53 in this thread. Weber is currently working on it as of today.

Yes, that is good. Disappointing because the last versions had been rock solid for me and this has been nothing but trouble. I’ve had it lose the temp setpoint over and over on every cook I’ve done but it’s always kept the grill temp up until today when went completely out. When I turned it off and back on I didn’t get the improper shutdown at least and was able to fire it back up but lost possibly an hour of cook. Luckily the shoulder was at 170 at the time so not in the danger zone for bacteria.

Are you Android or iOS?

I had very similar problems early this week. Found a new update for iOS yesterday so installed and seems to be better. We will see. IOS App version is 0.9.14.

I have not upgraded to iOS 14 yet. Still using iOS 13.7.
Used the grill last night and seemed to be fine. Changed temp several time using the app and no loss of set point.

Had my first issue with the latest software last night. The unit ran flawlessly while smoking at 225F. However, when entered a new set point of 375F via my phone, it correctly changed to the new set-point to finish a pork tenderloin. Pellet hopper was 2/3 full.

However the temperature began dropping and received a low temperature warning both on the unit and my cell phone when it dropped to 160F. I Manually entered a new temp of 385 and pellets started feeding furiously to the fire box which still had a fire going. Temperature shot up to 490F (not good for the pork tenderloin or the Brussels sprouts), causing me to open the top until temperature dropped back to around 400F.

Rest of the cook was normal, but late...spouse not happy.

Prior to starting the cook I updated my Android with the latest software firmware and — software for SF were updated three days ago— and thinking Android to be the issue I forgot/unpaired the phone and then paired with my iPad ( also latest software) and could monitor but not control.

Going back at it again today...

Folks, I have noticed that since the recent update (app/OS/firmware) that I have been getting debris left in the firebox when I go to startup the next time. I have two choices; 1. the updates, or 2. the new pellets. Anybody notice anything?

Actually, with the newer update, I find that the firebox actually stays cleaner, as, in stead of the auger reversing immediately, it actually adds pellets and then runs the fan on high for a few minutes to promote combustion...after that it goes into reverse auger mode and the normal shutdown mode.

Well, the wheels fell off today. In a short three hour run, I had a loss of pairing, two temp set point drops, a flare up, and burnt product. My running message to Weber that I sent two days ago has not been answered. Well, they got another one today. I am going to remain quiet until they respond.

I hate that you guys are having issues. I love my SmokeFire but I still haven’t recommended one to anyone.
