App update checking

After my cook was done I turned it off and back on and sure enough I got the flashing probe lights and firmware updated to 1.2 1394. Must have downloaded while was cooking. I was not prompted in the app or could see the download progress like when I first got my EX4 and had to update the firmware. Kind of wished it had done it before my cook. I couldn’t find a change log.

The new firmware seemed to control my temperature much better when compared to an ambient probe I added. But, it took longer than usual to get to 250 and it still won't go above 500 in less than 45 minutes. My pork chops were good but I never really got to sear them properly. Still disappointed.

Have you contacted Weber? Should do better than that. I hit 600 in 20 minutes even in below freezing temps.

I have called them multiple times. They had me change my auger and motor and it "fixed" it for about 5 cooks then the same thing happened. Now they claim it is software. This firmware update is not the software they are claiming will fix the problem. This has happened to a huge number of people now and they are telling all of us that it will be fixed with a software update at the end of the week or the week after.

I hope that’s the case.

I've gotten the same response as well from Weber. I believe we will be getting the BIG firmware update here in a couple weeks. I'm not concerned about the software and the app at this time, I just want my grill to work, and that requires the firmware.

Hi Adam,

Thank you for reaching back to us and I'm glad you inquired about our software update.

Because we're pleased to share that our first major software upgrade for the SmokeFire grill will occur in the next couple weeks. It will include a number of performance enhancements, such as an upgraded start-up program to improve ignition and pre-heat functionality, and a new re-ignition mode, among other improvements. This update should help with the temperature issues you're experiencing.

Additional software and app upgrades will continue rolling out over the next several weeks to add more enhancements and new functionality, so that your SmokeFire will continue to get smarter.

If you have any further questions, always feel free to reach back to us. We're happy to help!

Kindly,

Solo E

Earlier today I called to see if the 1.2_1394 update was the one that was supposed to fix things. They told me that is was NOT the one. They said that the firmware was not updated, just the June OS software. The firmware update is the big one that will not be available until sometime by the end of the month. Apparently the firmware version 04003 is the version that we all updated to when we first turned on our grills. I am getting very tired of them pushing the date on this upgrade. It has been 2 weeks for the last 2 weeks. Right now I have a grill that only works reliably up to 400 degrees. That is like buying a car that only goes 40 miles per hour and will not even be legal on the highway. I am not very happy about Weber's service. The folks you talk to are very nice and patient but they do not have any technical information that gives me hope that the software will fix it. Why can't they be more transparent. The fact that many of us fixed the problem with the new auger and motor installation, only to see it return after 5 or 6 cooks suggests that it is a hardware issue. Perhaps it is dust degrading the ability to push enough pellets to reach high temperature. Maybe they have throttled to ability of the motor to push harder in the original software and they have enough headroom to make it work harder with software. That would make sense. But they are not telling us anything. Why not? They told me that the auger replacement would fix my problem. Now they are saying it is software. I am losing my trust in Weber. I hope they can win it back.

Got this from Weber support today.

”Our first major software update should be released next week and become available for customers shortly. Just like the initial update you had to do with your SmokeFire the App will request you to update.

We are planning temperature control to be available on the Weber Connect App in April. “

looks like another small update to version 0.9.5.
I might try to power up my grill later to see if includes a firmware or software update.

I installed it and powered up my grill. No firmware update was indicated :(

I too installed it and powered up my grill. Nothing happened and I still have 04003 firmware. But, I went to weber.com and looked at the support page. Weber just updated their support page. They talk about the 0.95 IOS software and give the following instructions. I will give this a try in a few minutes. Maybe there is hope!!!!

HOW DO I UPDATE MY FIRMWARE?

Plug in your SmokeFire.
Push the SmokeFire power button ON.
Confirm that you have the latest version, and have updated, the Weber Connect app on your phone. The current version for iOS: 0.9.5 Android: 0.9.4
Pair your SmokeFire to the Weber Connect app via Bluetooth. Updates will not occur if connected via WiFi.
Ensure that your smartphone is within Bluetooth range for approximately 15 minutes as the update takes place. We suggest leaving your smartphone on the side table for maximum range.
It is important to note that: during the update, you will not see any prompts or visual cues in the app or on your grill screen. The update will occur in the background. Keep the app open during this process.
After 15 minutes, shut down your grill by navigating to Grill Settings (on the control screen) and enter shutdown mode. Once shut down is complete, the grill will display that it’s safe to turn off your grill. At this time, flip the grill switch off. Once the grill has completely shut down, power SmokeFire back on again for the update to sync to the grill controller.
Once the grill is powered back on, wait one minute, and then navigate to the grill’s About screen.
Check that the Firmware Version is now 04008. It will take up to a minute for the controller version to be reflected.

Worked for me. Thanks!

The support page says this:

WHAT IS IMPROVED WITH THE FIRMWARE UPDATE?

Twin Fire Ignition – To help guarantee a seamless startup, our new Twin Fire Ignition technology will automatically reboot ignition if the flame isn’t detected during preheat.
Reignition Mode – Reignition Mode keeps your grill hot, in the rare event of a flame-out or temperature drop. As long as your pellets are flowing, and the lid is closed, the flame will automatically reignite to get the grill back to its set temperature

I am firing up the smokefire now. I have been unable to get above 500 for the past two weeks. We will see if it helps.
