Should I buy used EX4

Just got off the phone with Weber customer service. They did not want to transfer the warranty or let me re-register the grill. It was just a call service operator who took my call. He didn't really want to try too hard to get me into the Weber so I'll either buy anew EX4 or buy a RecTeq Bullseye.
Thanks again for everyone's input.
...I just cooked my first steak on my smoke fire. Took it to 500. It stayed right there. Steak turned out really good, too. Do t know if another pellet grill can do that.

I would grap the grill's serial number and see if you can register it. If you can, run with it.

In a way you can’t blame Weber as their stated warranty is for original owners.

I agree but you know that there are a lot of original owners who have not stayed for the ride. I would think that Weber would like to get all of the problems out of the market churn.

I agree, but then where and how does it end. If it was purely a case of recalling/repurchasing/replacing defective units that would make sense. It might also make sense for Weber to provide some type of reduced, limited warranty on second owner units for which they have not incurred any real costs trying to troubleshoot and repair original owner units beyond the standard replacement parts.

However, after following a number of pellet grill owners sites, there are a lot of people who simply find them to complicated or to time consuming or to inconvenient and want to off-load them. Likewise, there seems to be quite a number of “abused” units up for resale. Those “buyer remorse” purchases and resales are a real problem for manufacturers.

I totally agree. My problem is that I am an old dinosaur, who tries to have personal responsibility. I am still trying to figure out how and why I work in higher ed........ :(

Same here...went through 3 working careers, including a stint in higher education and now a “4th career without pay” in retirement these past 12 years trying to help fight food insecurity and hunger in a Country where that should never exist.

I grew up in a remote rural area where you were happy to eat. And I have three kids who are "foodies." They run when I open a can of Spam. I do not understand it.

That being said, if they put out an inferior product, and all the issues. I would maybe talk to some one a little higher up the food chain over there. Or just buy the new unit. You could say where does it stop, but I’ve purchased used cars before that had recalls and still had the recall issue fixed.

My dad used to whip out a can of spam, fry it up and make the most wonderful sandwiches. The other day, feeling nostalgic, I bought some spam, fried it up and YUCH! Gross! I couldn’t do it...tasted exactly like the smell of canned dog food. I just couldn’t do it.

If there were to be a safety recall, as most auto recalls are, I am certain that Weber would have to fixed that type of issue.

Just wanted to give everyone an update. The owner of the used EX4 messaged me, the day after Christmas, and said he would take $400 for it. He said he's installed all the warranty parts Weber supplied to fix initial launch issues. Although I probably can't transfer the warranty to me, I'm going to buy it anyway. Seems like a great price. I'm picking it up tomorrow.

Pretty sweet price, if I was in the market I would have pulled the trigger!

That is a great deal! Even if Weber will not warrant the unit, you are far ahead of the game. Make sure the finger guard has been removed, purchase a couple of spare glow plugs and a pack of spare fuses and you are good to go.

Okay everybody. Here's the update. I just picked it up and brought it home. Gave it a good cleaning although it wasn't really that dirty. The finger guard was still in the hopper so I remove that. May have been what was causing some of his flame out issues. He already installed the new hopper slide and one piece auger shoot. I set it to 300 degrees and it didn't seem to want to light. I manually lit it and it seems to be going good right now. I haven't gone through a shutdown cycle yet to see if it will start on it's own.
I'll post an update after the second restart try
