Thought the chromed straps on the lid would be black too? Doesn't seem like it matches the image on the box..

They are in the picture on the box! good catch. I think they were in all the preliminary photos I saw of the cooker itself. I wonder if they have some old stock they are burning through. If so, that's probably a bad idea as it will garner negative attention.

It was probably a pre release unit that had the black and they didnt go ahead with it. They have done that in the past.

I was actually wondering how they would make them blacked out. Seems it could be expensive, relatively speaking.

PVD coating can achieve that black chrome effect on both chrome plated and stainless steel, gives a super durable finish that will not flake off. Common in kitchenware and hardware, it is not expensive to do.

I also would love to see the pellet slide and firebox if you could. Did it also come with the fancy glow plug holder?

Also just wanna stop for a moment to reflect on how gorgeous the SmokeFire is. Before buying mine I read all kinds of reviews and was fully aware of the issues early adopters had but in the end Weber's peerless reputation combined with the breathtaking beauty of this glorious gleaming limousine of barbecued pleasures totally won out, hands down. No prettier pellet pooper has ever been made, and beneath that pretty exterior beats the heart of a serious workhorse.

I confess that I did look into Tr@#&er but was thoroughly unimpressed. Graceless gritty tin boxes and FFS the name sounds like a knee tumour.

If you look at the stock photos of the epx6 on Weber’s sight one of the pictures shown makes the straps look shiny instead of the flat black, i think its how the light hits them in certain photos.

I just had a look and you are right... They are clearly black in all the pics apart from one where they are clearly not black.
I am now convinced that somewhere along the way, they decided against the black strips.

Website clearly shows three images from the initial showing about a month ago, and the final is clearly chrome/stainless. Wonder if the straps are different material?

Chrome straps is where they ended up? Well so much for "Stealth", my guess is that marketing got out in front running their big uninformed mouths before NPD had a chance to do their thing. Typical IME. This is a great example of why subbing renderings for actual photography on product packaging should be the exception and not the norm.

From what I can tell looking at the lid on my EX6 (which has a cross-threaded cap screw that isn't even properly seated), the straps are more decorative than functional and could possibly be removed altogether to accomplish the "stealth" aesthetic.
