You will be able to control temps remotely with the Weber Connect app on SmokeFire units only - it is currently not available but will be.Here's some interesting dialogue I had with Weber Support about the new Weber Connect app via email today. Here's the exchange:
Me:
"With regards to the new Weber Connect app, will it be able to control the grill remotely when my phone is not connected to the same wifi network the grill is connected to? e.g. if i leave the house to run an errand? What functions of the grill will the Weber Connect app be able to control? turn on and off? change temps? automatically changes temps after a certain amount of time or when the the temperature of the food hits a certain point?"
Response:
"Weather connected via Weber connect, or Bluetooth, the grill can only be monitored remotely. You can monitor your grill, via any wi-fi connection, but it not recommended to leave the grill unattended for any amount of time.
The grill can only be controlled at the grill. There is no remote control, only monitoring. "
I guess I had assumed/was hoping the new Weber Connect app would allow for remote control of the SmokeFire in some way - and that it would at least provide parity with other competitor apps (GMG, Rec Tec, Traeger, Yoder, etc). I'm kind of having a hard time believing the support rep given how much Weber has touted the amount of thought/research/testing that went into the design and the publicized utilization of JuneOS.
Just seems like it would be a big miss. Think maybe the rep was misinformed? Anyone have any detail on the Weber Connect app that can confirm/deny?
I was ready to pull the trigger on a pre-order, but this is definitely giving me pause as remote control is an important feature to me.
I have the same issue. Even moved my so go extender next to the patio door but no dice. The app will be nice at some point in sure, but at this point....its just a glorified way to get updates to the grill software.Any advice on connecting WiFi? My Bluetooth connected right away and is solid, but have yet to connect WiFi. It’s not the signal, I have a strong signal where the grill is sitting. I’m using an iPhone 7 running current IOS 13.3.1.
Mine didn’t connect initially but after moving it out of my garage and updating the grill firmware and the iPhone app it connected right away. I’m using an Eero network iPhone 11 plus on 13.3.1. Do you get an error or anything after entering your SSID and password?Any advice on connecting WiFi? My Bluetooth connected right away and is solid, but have yet to connect WiFi. That's what mine did. I figured it was my wifi being the wrong channel. I only tried once. Maybe I'll have time to get mad at it in a week or so. LolAfter a minute or so or trying to connect it shows ‘Failed to setup WiFi’ in red. Even though I have a strong WiFi signal outside where it sits, I plugged an extender into the same receptacle to see if that would help. Same issue.
I’ll call Weber tomorrow to see if they have any advice to help.
Thanks for the response!
Can’t say for sure , but I have an Eero mesh network and mine was able to connect. Eero uses the same SSID for both the 2.4 and 5 GHz networks, so it seems the SmokeFire doesn’t have an issue with that like some IoT devices do.I have the google mesh routers. Will this potentially cause me a problem trying to connect my grill to my network?
Ok good to know and yes the google does it the same way. Thanks for the info! Can’t say for sure , but I have an Eero mesh network and mine was able to connect.
