Hi fellow SmokeFire enthousiasts 🤪,

Tonight (17th of April) I’m going for a big cook. I have decided to make pulled pork. And with big I mean that the Boston Butt that I have picked weighs 5kg (10 pounds). So hopefully I will be able to provide friends and family some nice pulled pork buns tomorrow. A nice surprise 🥳 in this Covid-19 lockdown time. The weather is fine 🌤 and I have prepared my ex6 for the long haul.

The Boston Butt is prepared with a dry rub. I will set my ex6 to 120 degrees Celsius (250 Fahrenheit) and my guesstimate is that it will take 15 hours to reach the desired 92 degrees Celsius (198 Fahrenheit.)

Some pictures of my preparation 😇 for this cook:

I will post regular updates so you can join my journey towards hopefully a successful/delicious cook.

Did you start already ? My SmokeFire is just cooling down. ;)

Seems the new version of the app is working much better.

Did you give it a try already?

Good luck

Update 1: The introduction of the pièce de résistance and the start of the cook.

Well it is time to go to bed (local time 00:02) and thus also time to put the Buston Bud on the grill. I have put a pan of cooking hot water next to the Buston Bud in the grill for some moister. As you can see the rub is already on a few hours and doing it’s job. Fingers crossed 🤞 hopefully everything goes well. It’s my first overnighter with my EX6.

Some notes: I just notice there are updates of the app's so I have quickly updated my iPhone and Adroid phone. I already notice some differences. First on the android tempatures are shown in Celcius and Fahrenheid depending on your choise. This was not working in the past (only Fahrenheit). On the iphone you hear now sounds and the tempature of your grill only shows when you are doing a cook. On adroid it still shows the tempature but no sounds.

small additional update: I increased the tempature to 125 Celcius (257 Fahrenheit)

Later 😜 I'm going to 😴

Good morning fellow SmokeFire enthusiasts 🤪 ,

Well good morning, at least it is where I live 🇳🇱. It is now 09:11 hours when I’m writing this and we are now also 9 hours in the cook. I had a good night sleep 🌜and was not disturb by the ex6. So presumably everything should be ok? So after a quick shower a cup of ☕ (Java) i went to the garden to have a look at the ex6 and of course at the pièce de résistance (The bud). Below some pictures 📸 how I found the whole setup.

Well it looks like the cook is going as planned. I have decided not to wrap the bud as I have plenty of time. There are no immediate action required beside adding some pellets. But there are some things that I have noticed. I will report on that later. Time for breakfast 🥐 and another cup of Java ☕.

Laaaater 🤪

I’m back SmokeFire enthousiasts, with an update on the cook and app comments,

I must say everything is running super smoothly. I’m now 13.5 hours in the cook and everything is working as a charm. No “real” issues. So far no Bridging, no cavitation void, no flame outs, no nothing…….. But what I do see is that the app still needs work.

e.g. you get an alert (I missed it by the way), you tab on the notification you will immediately navigate to the weber connect app. And then ……………… you are in the app were you left it the last time you were in. What I expect is for instance that you get the message/alert that is displayed on the control unit but it does not. What I also would expect is a place in the app where you can see all the (past) alerts. Another thing I miss is the graph of the temperature development like in the Weber iGrill app.

What I also have notice is that my Wi-Fi is now rock solid. In the past few weeks it was not working at all. There are 2 things that I (warning it can become a bit geeky) did. First off all you need to make sure the SmokeFire is on a 2g Wi-Fi network. This is important because the SmokeFire does not work on a 5g Wi-Fi network. If you have a combined one make sure that the WIFI network is not constantly trying to put/promote 2g devices to 5g Wi-Fi bandwidth. If your network does this, you need to disable this. Second thing that I notice is that configuring the Wi-Fi settings with the iPhone was always successful. Doing this with the android app resulted each time in failure. Note: I did this with the previous versions of the apps (iPhone 0.9.5 and android 0.9.4). Configuring the Wi-Fi with the lates iPhone app works fine and has indead improved. Dit not have the chance to try this yet.

Well another update will follow………

Well another update will follow………

Regarding the WiFi: I saw the same „issues“.
Also mine looses after about 10-24 Hours the wifi Connection and you cannot even ping it any more.

The only that helps is a complete restart of the whole Grill.

Hi, I'm back with the final part😭,

The long haul was a total success. I had no technical issues at all, the only “🤔issues” I have are the app’s they are not yet fully developed. But what I have to say is that with each iteration they get better. I would love it, if they would make the system opensource🧐 so that 3’rd parties could build apps as well. I think we would have cool apps very quickly.

But back to the cook. The pulled pork was delicious 🥳 and was well received by the audience. It took in total 🕖 15:38 hours to reach the desired 92c/198F. After that I put the Boston bud to bed for another hour, tugged in a blanked of aluminium foil and towels to stay nicely warm. After a little bit over a hour I unpacked the bud and pulled the meat. I throw some butter buns on the BBQ, then pulled pork on it, BBQ sauce, 2 pickle slices and some coleslaw and then, then a big bite…….. mmmmmmm  delicious.

The bud is ready 92 degrees celciusthe bud in bed nicely tugged inThe bud, seconds before getting pulled.pulling the budmmmmmm, delicious

So there is one question left what should I make next, suggestions?😉

That looks awesome. Some of the best looking bark I've seen Bruno. Any secrets on how you got that?
