Grill Grates

Question for those using them on your SF. Can they sit on the grill while I'm doing a long and slow? Or will that affect the ambient temp in the grill and cause issues with the controller ? I was thinking of I can leave them on one of the sides while I'm smoking a cowboy steak and then raise the temp to seat, and they're already in place or do I need to put them in after the smoke and before the sear. THANKS
I would do just that.

I looked into buying the Weber cutting board accessory when I bought the end shelf for my new EX4. Reading reviews and looking at the price of the board suggested I might see what I could do on my own. I had some spare oak and a bit of teak so I glued that up with the idea of slicing to length/width, then plane to thickness so it would fit the brackets on the shelf. Once I got there (thickness) it occurred to me that those edge glued boards would never last long so I laminated a piece of plywood to add strength. Sanded things down, liberally coated the underside with spar polyurethane and the top working surface with butcher block oil. Time will tell if it stands the test of time and weather. I'm now noodling an idea about some sort of shelf that could be 'tethered' between the 4 legs in a non-permanent way and provide a place to store all the gadgets I am rapidly accumulating (eg. I just bought a GrillGrate).
Cheers

The Weber cutting boards are actually fabulous. They are Epicurean, I believe. Highly regarded in the industry. I do applaud your initiative and hard work. Hopefully it pays off. If nothing else you have the satisfaction.

I’ve been threatening to add a shelf on the bottom for a year and a half now. There are screw zercs already there. I simply have to get some aluminum angle stock and create a base then attach a weather proof material for the shelf. Good luck.

I'm curious why those holes are there. Are they for a future Weber accessory?

I absolutely think that was the intent but for one reason or another, I think we can assume it’s not gonna happen. Too bad, I’d buy one. It’d add storage off the ground and stabilize the leges and wheels. Win win. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Damn! That’s a great point! Cancel making that plywood shelf myself! 😬
Yeah, I had thoughts of shelf or drawers, until I did the burn in. It would be hard for those sparks to light a big piece of solid wood, but I could see finish being damaged.

I thought some aluminum angle and maybe some heavy expanded metal or some scrap wire shelving. Something that won’t hold water and I can attach to add stability to the chassis and provide a place to set stuff like my grid insert or ceramic stone etc. I wish I weren’t so lazy. 😁

I was thinking the same thing after you mentioned that the screw zercs were there. Aluminum angle front to rear and a suitable grate like expanded metal (SS would be ideal) - with some left to right support mid-way front to back (I too have a ceramic stone). Challenge is to find a custom cut SS expanded metal grate and a reasonable price.
