Auger failure

It should not be at all. I have never done that nor do I know anyone personally who does. I have quite a few buddies who cook on Smokefire grills but obviously not thousands. I will say that these sorta things do happen with pellet grills. You might not have another problem like that for years if ever. 🤷🏼‍♂️ There’s a lot of moving parts and electronics. The very things that make them so easy and popular can from time to time fail and cause some frustration. My solution? Buy a second one for more space and always have a backup😜. I kid, sort of.
Thanks. Great post.

my auger bolt broke a couple weeks ago- same thing happened. Weber sent me a replacement cotter pin but mine had the the bolt. are these parts just interchangeable?

Not sure. I could swear mine has a cotter pin. I could be wrong. I do know Traeger uses a small bolt to attach their augers. It’s a real PITA to get in and tightened. Ugh!

Good luck moving forward.

Tried to fire up my EX4 2 last night. Seemed fine but after a few minutes realized pellets weren’t dropping. Waited 10 minutes and no pellets ran shutdown which worked fine. Never got an error message. Took out grates and inspected fire pit. Totally empty. Removed what pellets from the auger I could reach. Reassembled and tried again. No luck. Will try removing auger when it stops raining here. Why no error message and do you think it’s an auger jam or something else.
thanks

The auger is pretty quick and simple to remove, (at least as far as I know, which pertains to the gen2 version). You'll need to do this to diagnose.

If the motor is turning, I suspect the little cotter nut and bolt that secures the auger to the shaft of the motor either snapped or came undone.

It may have snapped in the event of a jam, (by design I assume), or it may have just come undone. (I had reason to take my auger out recently and the little bolt on the cotter nut was nowhere to be found. It came loose and fell off at some point. From there I was probably just lucky that the nut didn't slide right out, in which case my auger would have stopped rotating.)

Hope this helps - Cheers!

Hey Boss,
The cotter pin on the auger has sheared.
Easy repair for the cotter pin. Just be certain you replace it with a soft metal one. It shears for a reason.
If it oval shaped the hole it goes thru....I would tach weld it closed and drill a new hole. You don't want a lot of slack in it because when it reverses it can build
inertia and amp the motor up causing bigger problems.
You might stay away from the longer pellets . They seem to hang up in the auger more than others.
Hope this helped.

Removed the auger. No sign of a broken pin or bolt. Auger turned freely in the motor so something snapped . Got a stainless cotter pin from the store I bought the grill. Reassembled and working perfectly.

Did you check the electrical connection in the controller wiring harness? Just spitballing

Weber Competition Blend. Properly stored in my garage. None are more then a few weeks old. Never knew cleaning the auger was part of routine maintenance
How often do you cook on the grill? I usually use my EX6 three to four times a week. If you have a first generation chute you might want to work with Weber Tech support to replace the chute and auger assembly. I just finished fixing a repair on the EX6 working with Weber Tech Support. I purchased the EX6 in March 2021 and had a temperature problem. Turned out to be a faulty chute, auger, auger backing plate problem.
