Starting to get large rust patches forming on my large central flavouriser bar, where the enamel seems to have come away and the metal underneath has rusted, is this normal and something I shouldn't be worried about?

Weber replaced my front shelf that holds the flavorizer bars when they had some rust chunks flaking off. My center one has some small rust areas forming on the sides too.

Reply back from Weber UK re Flavorizer bars

You should expect to see rust forming on your Flavorizer Bars, as they are positioned just above your burner tubes and have hot fat dripping on them from above (rising vapour creates the barbecue taste). This part is covered against burn through/ rust through, which means if any holes start to form – Please get back in touch if any holes do start to form within your warranty and we will be happy to take another look.

To prolong the life of this part I would recommend applying a layer of vegetable oil to the bars and the grates when stored or cleaned, this will help protect them from any oxidization that could occur. You may be surprised to learn that your Flavorizer Bars can be over cleaned, the reason for this is that the fat and burnt build-up help protect this part. I would like to point out that a quick brush down is required before use to help keep your Flavorizer in check, this just removes any excess build-up.

One more point to consider is FBR, or, 'Flavorizer Bar Rotation', this comes directly from our Grill Academy chefs. If you only use one side or do a lot of indirect cooking then rotating your bars will help the whole set last longer, if you continue to use only a select few then the bars that you use all time will perish before the others.

I do actually rotate my flavorizer bars occasionally, but hard to rotate the big center one over the fire pot since there is only one of them. :)

In fairness they sent me 2 new glowplugs as I also mentioned that I have got through 2 now in 12 months as since the last firmware update a message comes up saying Glowplug needs replacing. I think 2 in 12 months is excessive personally and will become expensive if they only last 6 months at a time and would be cheaper to buy a decent hand held burner to get them started if that is their life expectancy

Just reset the reminder. Mine was saying replace glow plug and I reset the reminder, all good.

Do like Bruno suggests. I’ve been using pellet grills for almost a decade and have never had to change one of my glow plugs. Not to say they will all last that long but they should last quite some time.

Well we have at least another year and a half to see how the heat shield holds up. I know Weber has amazing customer service and I plan on addressing any issues I see before the 3 year Warranty is up.

I suspect they will stand behind them if they actually fail. Their point of view is the rust is simply cosmetic at this point and likely for a considerable time in the future.
