Changing Temp Mid-Cook

I’ve done a few cooks on my Searwood and they’ve generally come out great but one thing I’ve noticed, if I start low around 225 and then increase the temp to 400ish, the grill just keeps heating beyond the set temperature. If I open the cover and drop the set temperature 5-10 degrees it’s eventually able to maintain at the temp I’m looking for, but initially just keeps rising.

Was wondering if anyone else noticed this or had a fix for it

I’ve had this happen twice. 1st time doing chicken 2nd time doing shotgun shells. Both increasing temp mid cook. Not happy. contacted Weber and waiting a response.
When I did chicken went from smoke mode to 450 and it was running 590. I shut it down cause it seemed like it wasn’t gonna stop. Have you figured anything out?

Same issue.. glad I am not alone on this one. I have only had the Searwood for a couple weeks and it's my first non-gas grill, so I started with some cheaper, easier cooks to get used to things. I started with chicken wings using a modified 0-400 method. I started the wings at 180 using the smoke-boost setting for about 20 minutes just to try and get some extra flavor. I then adjusted the temp to 400 and the grill flew up to 500 with no signs of slowing down. I opened the lid and backed the temp setting to 300 before it started to come back down.

Second cook: Two pork tenderloins, one was bacon-wrapped. Did the majority of the cook at 225 until I got to an internal temp of about 130. I moved the temp setting to 325 to finish them and get some extra crisp on the bacon. Within a few minutes the grill was at 425 and rising.. again had to open the lid and back the temp down to the initial 225 setting before it balanced out.. by that time the pork had cooked well beyond the internal temperature I wanted.

I was getting ready to contact Weber, but figured I would check to see if anyone else was having this issue first, or that maybe I was doing something wrong. I am also unable to connect my Android phone to the control panel via bluetooth.. works fine with my wife's Iphone though. Kind of disappointing.

Please keep us posted if Weber gets back with you on this issue.

Interesting and disappointing. Keep us updated on the response.

I've had this temp spike twice on my Searwood. First time I don't remember the details, but yesterday I went from Smoke Mode to 350 degrees and it kept rising to about 500 degrees. I opened the lid to see if sensor was somehow blocked, but no issue with that. I wasn't sure what to do, then temp came back down to 350 on its own.

Will be intersting to see what Weber response is.

I haven't had this problem with my grill, granted I've only had it for a couple of weeks. I have increased the temp a few times mid-cook and I havent had a runaway temp situation. I am only using Weber pellets so maybe that's the reason?

Nope, that's not the reason.... I only use Weber pellets also.

Hopefully it's just some glitch than can be remedied with a firmware update. The only problem I've encountered is that nothing shows up in the "Now Grilling" section on the Weber Connect App. The Searwood shows up in the "Grills" menu and I can control all the features from that part of the app but nothing shows up in "Now Grilling". Not sure if there is some setting I need to activate but the Searwood is connected to my iPhone via BT and also Wi-Fi.

I had a similar problem a few weeks ago. I thought the control unit on my Searwood was broken, because the temperature kept rising above the set temperature displayed on the built-in control. I finally figured out that the problem was that the Weber Connect app on my iPhone was setting the temperature higher, because I had inadvertently activated some smart recipes while browsing recipes in the app. Those show in the app in the "Now Grilling" tab. Once I closed/canceled those smart recipes, the temperature dropped to the setting on the grill.
